Students Help Team Fundraise For Bike Race

Posted: Updated:

Mitchell Hintz is just like any other 22-year-old determined to accomplish his goals. For the past eight years, one goal has been to raise the most money for Sanford Health's Great American Bike Race.

Mitch has three teams this year, and the riders aren't just from Dickinson.

"We have 15 riders coming from Mott," says Donalda Hintz, Mitch's mom. "He has the mayor riding."

"They brought right under $10,000 last year from a community of 800 people."

That money helped one of Mitch's teams earn the title of top fundraising team for the eighth year in a row last year. Mitch himself raised the most as an individual.

"It's amazing, it's wonderful, but when they see Mitch and they see how it has helped him, how it has helped us, it's amazing," Donalda says.

GABR funds have helped the Hintz family get some much needed equipment, like a portable wheelchair.

"I want to thank Donna Abrahamson's fifth-grade class and the whole community of Dickinson. Without them, I don't think it would happen," Hitz says.

Abrahamson's class at Roosevelt Elementary in Dickinson. For nearly a decade, she and the school have helped to raise money for Mitch through a hat day fundraiser.

"I feel it's been so important to have Mitch come in and students see he is just like everyone else," Abrahamson says.

Students say it's something they look forward to every year.

"It means a lot, because when we raise money for him, it also helps find the money for research, says Logan Greenwood a student in Abrahamson's class. "To help find money for different items that could help him with what he's going through."

Last year, the school raised just under $1,000.

The Great American Bike Race is next Saturday, April 26 at Century High School.
