Family Focus: Child Development

Posted: Updated:

From the first cry, to first words and first steps, parents are always trying to make sure that their child's development is on track. Turns out some of those milestones we look for actually may help determine that.

Development depends on age group. At each age, there is something different to look for.

For newborns, don't expect much more than the wake-up, cry, eat and redundant schedule. Two months later, babies will start to sleep with their hands up, mostly making a fist.

Babies used to roll at around four months. Pediatrician Diana Peterson says she's seen that change.

"Since we put them on their back, they are all a little slow now. So, if you read the books, they will say that babies should roll by four months. The majority of kids I see don't roll until six months," she says.

At six months, your child should be able to sit a bit. And, between nine and 10 months, don't be surprised if they are pulling up on the furniture.

Dr. Peterson says its right for you to help your child start walking whenever they become interested. Some children will walk before a year, but the majority doesn't independently walk until 12 to 15 months.

Between one and three years old, your child will get faster, and their motor skills will become more developed. Pretty much, they just keep going.

Although vocabulary may vary from child to child, they should all be able to understand what they are being told.

At this point, a family outsider should be to understand at least half of what a three year old says and 100 percent of what a four year old says. Colors should be identifiable to a four year old, and, most of them can actually sing their ABC's.

"When they come in, I'm looking at more of what they know, and how they talk at that point," Dr. Peterson says.

While these are just building blocks in your kid's development, it's important to remember that all children develop at their own pace.
