Community Center's Opening Day Draws Near

Posted: Updated:

Members of the West River Community Center in Dickinson are a little behind on their workout routines after the center's weeklong closure. But they'll have a lot more exercise options when the new cardio and strength areas open this week.

Time is ticking away in just a few days, members of the West River Community Center will get to see their new workout space.

Workers brought in two truckloads of new cardio and strength equipment Wednesday to fill up the space. The free weight area is three times as big as before.

"The community's been very supportive and very positive of the entire project. And not only the project, but having to shut down for seven days, obviously that affects a lot of people's personal workout schedules," says James Kramer the director of Dickinson Parks and Rec.

Now, if you're looking to pump some iron and maybe use the cardio machines, you're in luck, those will be open on Friday. But if you want to use the basketball courts or the track, you're going to have to wait a couple of weeks.

"We should have the basketball court open the last week of April, completely done, and then the walking track will be a couple weeks behind that," says Kramer.

But builders say the existing walking track and courts will be open during construction. And they're excited to see the community's reaction to the additions.

"It's the kind of project that you want to deliver top quality project and we will. I think the public will be very happy with this first phase," says Pat Barnett the project manager.

The next phases of the project are the outdoor pool and the ice rink. But Barnett says he needs the community's help with one thing to get those done.

"Pray for warm weather!" says Barnett.

He says the pool should be finished in June, and the rink shortly after that. The West River Community Center is celebrating its 10th anniversary this summer, and Kramer says they're hoping to kick off the celebration with the new pool.
