Organization Looking For Volunteer Caregivers

Posted: Updated:

As we get older, just doing basic household chores can be a challenge. And if you're living on a fixed income, it's likely too expensive to have in-home help. That's where Volunteer Caregivers for the Elderly (VCE) comes in.

Volunteer Caregivers for the Elderly says they have more seniors than they have volunteers. They say the best volunteers are students, and they need more.

Every day Ray Magstad walks downstairs, rides his bike for 600 oscillations, listens to books on tape and dusts to keep his house tidy.

There's just one thing that makes these daily tasks amazing. Ray is 96 years old with poor vision and still lives on his own.

"I'm pretty stubborn guy, very independent. I keep plugging on," says Magstad.

Ray's able to do this with help from Volunteer Caregivers for the Elderly. A program that provides free assistance to independent seniors.

"I'm so appreciative of this volunteer care-deal that I wouldn't be able to live in my home if it wasn't for them," says Magstad.

"Oh my God, Ray is a charming individual. One day I came over, and I was just having a bad day. Tests, so many tests, locked my keys in my car, and instantly he made my day brighter," says volunteer Kayden Candrian.

His nurse, Candrian, is a nursing student from the University of Mary. The students spend four weeks, spending time with the seniors helping them however they can.

Kayden and Ray like to play checkers and his slot machine.

VCE partners with UMary's nursing program. Students get class credit, and the program gets knowledgeable volunteers. But with summer coming up, volunteer numbers will dwindle.

"We always a need for more because there's more elderly people that have needs," says VCE director Moira Solberg. "And as the baby boomers age, we're going to have a lot of people who want to stay independent. A program like this is that exact thing."

VCE says they have great volunteers aside from the students, and they say they're hopeful more help will come.

Solberg says there is no better gift than giving. If you're interested in finding out more on the program call 223-9290.
