Hoffner Leaves Minot For Mankato

Posted: Updated:

Todd Hoffner is headed back to Minnesota State. The former head coach resigned today to take the Mankato job less than a week after an arbitrator ruled that he had been wrongly fired from Minnesota State.

Hoffner was fired by the Mavericks when he was charged with multiple counts of possessing child pornography. A judge dismissed those counts in 2013. Minot State hired Hoffner in January, wanting to get its football team to the top half of the Northern Sun. Now, MSU is looking for its second head coach since the start of 2014. At his press conference in Minneapolis, it was clear Hoffner was already thinking about the Mavericks.

"I intend to resume my duties Wednesday for the Mavericks' football. From here on out, I hope I only have to talk at press conferences about the Mavericks football team and our success," Hoffner says.

MSU athletic director Rick Hedberg says it's been a whirlwind for him ever since the news of the arbitrator's ruling last week. He's confident in the Beavers' future, however.

"We have a full set of assistants and graduate assistants to fill in. We're going to try to move forward as quickly as possible replacing our head coach. We've got a couple options. Obviously, we had a great pool of applicants, we had well over 150 applicants in the first process and some great finalists. We're going to look back in that pool, possibly. We also have the possibility of opening it up," Hedberg says.

Hedberg says that he hopes to have a head coach within 10-14 days. Right now, defensive coordinator Byron Thomas is the interim head coach.
