Construction Begins On Airport Project

Posted: Updated:

Work on the $40.3 million construction project at Minot International Airport is officially underway.

For the last several weeks, the contractors have been warming the land, which will house 6 gates and 4 jet bridges.

"They've actually been using defrosting equipment to be able to defrost deeper than what the weather would allow, so that is allowing them to dig early," says Minot International Airport director Andy Solsvig.

But, even with an early start, there's still a lot of work to be done.

"They're going to be footing in the next few weeks and then, we'll start seeing steel come up in the next couple of months. We'll see steel being erected throughout the entire summer," says Solsvig.

Contractors will be working Monday through Friday and weekends as needed to make sure the project stays on schedule before winter sets in.

"The foundation is really the key," says Solsvig.  "They want to make sure the foundation is structurally sound, so we can start putting up steel."

While construction on the new airport building kicked off Tuesday, Solsvig and the rest of the airport staff hope to continue to provide efficient and prompt right here at the current terminal.

"For the construction project, we don't anticipate any obstructions to our current service of passenger flow, so that's good.  We'll have appropriate signage for the delivery trucks and things like that," says Solsvig.

As work continues on the new terminal, Solsvig is just trying to take it one day at a time.

"Well, it's going to be a busy summer," says Solsvig. "I'll put it that way. I just expect some long days and a lot of meetings. We will just keep moving forward as best as we can."

The new airport terminal is expected to open in fall of 2015.  Minot International will continue to keep the public informed on the latest construction news.
