Tribal Conference Focuses On Environmental Issues

Posted: Updated:

Tribal representatives from across the state are in Bismarck to discuss environmental concerns.

The State of the Environment on Tribal Lands conference focuses on environmental risk issues on reservations in the Dakotas and Montana. Tribes are also looking at ways to adapt to climate change. Other topics include fracking, water quality and solid waste.

"One of the large concerns now is dealing with solid waste and the filter socks, and what is the industry doing with those?" says environmental specialist Allyson Two Bears of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. "We heard an alarming figure today. Just two percent of those socks that are being used in the industry are actually being disposed of properly. So, where are the rest of those socks going?"

The two-day conference continues tomorrow. It's free and open to the public.
