Inside Business: Kirkwood Ace Hardware

Posted: Updated:

One locally owned hardware store is literally bursting at the seams, and will soon be expanding to a second location.

You could say the hardware business runs in Jeff Hinz's blood, or at least in his paint. His dad
ran a lumberyard in Minnesota, and Hinz worked in hardware and paint sales through high school and college before moving to Bismarck and ultimately taking over Kirkwood Hardware. This year he celebrates 25-years of ownership, and he has no regrets.

"I just love what I do. I have great employees, I have great customers. It's a great
town. People here adopted Lori and I as soon as we moved here. It was amazing having people wave to you on the streets in a town that you didn't know."

The store on south 7th St. carries about 40,000 different items, and Hinz expects it will continue to do well, but he also has his eye on busy north Bismarck. This spring he plans to break ground on a second store on Highway 83 to serve that growing market and to be closer to where his family lives.

"The north side is growing wildly. We moved to the north side, and the very first morning
I knew we had to do something up there. It's too long of a drive. Hardware is a neighborhood
business. You need to be close to the people who need your stuff. You don't want to spend an
hour driving away to get something."

Hinz has been in business a long time, and he's seen a lot of product lines come
and go, but the foundation of the business has always been there. That includes paints,
lawnmowers and barbecue grills.

"We love Toro, we love Weber. Weber is a corner stone. The new thing that has been
fantastic is the kitchen store we've done. And the north store will have a complete kitchen store associated with it."

Hinz says the new store at the northwest corner of Highway 83 and 43rd Ave. will be about 30,000 square feet, or 50 percent larger than the current store. If the weather
cooperates, he hopes to break ground this spring, and have the store open later this year. In
addition to kitchen items, lawnmowers, tools and barbeque grills, you can be sure the store will also offer paint, lots and lots of paint.
