Construction Companies Seek Employees

Posted: Updated:

Whether it's houses, shopping centers or schools there's new construction all over the Bismarck-Mandan area. But the heavy load of work has construction companies struggling to keep up with the demand.

The problem plaguing construction and trade companies all over the state is the lack of workers. Seven building trade groups came together for the Dakota Construction Career fair to recruit North Dakotans. The fair is in Bismarck the weekend, and I was able to catch up with some employers to talk about the opportunities available.

"We are all looking for people with all the work going on in North Dakota right now everybody is looking for people and we are no different," says Darrel Miller of Local 49 Operating Engineers.

Miller says anyone from high school students to skilled workers are encouraged to come check out the career fair. And employers say they are encouraging women to come too.

"We've seen an increasing in the women membership in all trades previous years and it turns out they're some of the best members we put on to these jobs," says Cory Bryson of Laborers Local 563.

Bryson says laborers alone have increased from 100 members three-years-ago to 600 in 2013, and he's expecting it to grow by 300 just this year. And with training and apprenticeship programs included, it's easy to kick start a career.

"We send kids to college a lot of times. They come out $30,000 to $50,000 in debt. Here you will be making money while you're learning," says Miller.

Leaders say the competitive wages and full benefits make construction a prosperous career and not just a summer job.

"Construction work is always going on even if it slows down there's still projects that are going to be maintained and taken care of," says Bob Colton of Carpenters Local 1091.

And some say they found pride in helping a community grow.

"Drive around years after you're working, and you look at what you've built what you've worked one," says Marc Jurek of Iron Workers Local 512.

Career Fairs have already been held in Williston and Minot, and after Bismarck and Dickinson, the Coalition is heading East to Jamestown and Fargo.
