Sisters Help Fort Yates Students

Posted: Updated:

You can meet a lot of Indian people in Fort Yates. But what about Indians from India?

Four Catholic sisters from India are serving the people of Fort Yates. The Teresian Carmelite sisters are part of the Catholic Indian Mission. And they're giving their time to the St. Bernard Mission School and Church of St. Peters.

"I think it's amazing, because I knew lots of nuns, but never some that transferred from a foreign country," says student Picabo Reeves.

Father John Paul Gardner says it's a joy to have the sisters in the community.

"Their English is a little bit different, but they speak the language of love by their actions. And so, we found an easy way to relate to them in their kindness and really, in their energy, their desire to serve, which is so beautiful," says father John Paul Gardner.

In addition to learning American English, they are learning about Lakota customs and the language. But that's not all they had to learn.

"Did you know, we do not drive much. We have a driver in every car. So, we went to learn driving," says Sister Cicily Silvien.

So far, the sisters have spent most of their time experiencing the culture and the community.
And of course, the food.

"Corn. I like corn. Because in India, we don't eat a lot of corn. Yeah, I like corn," says Silvien.

Silvien says she became a sister because she wanted to serve the people.

"First and foremost intention was to be united with the Lord Jesus. Then was to take up his task of mingling with the people, teaching them, and to do whatever service they need. Through him and through truth," says Silvien.

For now, the sisters are assisting other teachers, but they hope to teach their own classes in the future. They also visit the Elders of the Tribe and help take care of the church.

The sisters have promised to stay in Fort Yates for five-years.
