Family Focus: When To Start Dating

Posted: Updated:

Mother of five, Paula Hickel knows a thing or two about parenting. With each of her five children, she knows they have very different personalities

"My oldest is very thoughtful. She has to think through things before she makes her decision," Hickel says

When the time comes and her kids start asking questions, she's prepared to answer them. And, with a 12-year-old in the house, the topic of dating has come up.

Hickel says her biggest fear is that her girls will give themselves up physically, emotionally, or whatever way it may be, just because they feel that's what they need to do in order to be in a relationship.

There are some guidelines parents can follow to help ease them through this transitional phase.

Every teen is different, but it's okay to encourage group dating for ages 13-14. Intense solo dating at age 13 may not be developmentally appropriate and could put your child at risk. One-on-one dating usually begins around age 15 or 16.

When your teen asks to head out for the night don't be afraid to ask them questions

Village Family Service Center Regional Director Barbara Fix says it's a good idea to ask your teen who else is going to be part of the group date and who is driving.
