Heitkamp's Staff Reports Assault

Posted: Updated:

Bismarck police responded to the William Guy Building this afternoon to a report that a woman had assaulted someone from Senator Heidi Heitkamp's office.

Heitkamp's staff member had been working one-on-one with a 62-year-old homeless woman, who lived at the Bismarck Motel, and had met with her in the building's hallway. At some point the woman became upset, and grabbed the staff member by the shoulders and shook her. She also tried to punch her. Another employee intervened, and Heitkamp's staff member was not injured.

The woman was not arrested, because it was a misdemeanor not committed in the officer's presence. A report will be forwarded to the city attorney for possible charges of disorderly conduct and simple assault. The report will also go to the U.S. Attorney's office and the Burleigh County State's Attorney's office for possible charges.

"I'm incredibly proud of my staff for working hard every day to help North Dakotans and offer crucial assistance. The work they do truly changes lives. And their work should never come at the expense of their safety. I greatly appreciate everyone in my Bismarck office and our law enforcement officers for responding so quickly to the incident today. The legal process is now taking place," says Sen. Heitkamp.
