Bismarck Student Wins Poetry Contest

Posted: Updated:

What began as a way for one little girl to fill time ended up winning her first place in a poetry contest. Sunrise Elementary fifth-grader Paighton Volk won Bismarck's Human Relations Committee Human Rights Poetry Contest.

Volk's mother told her to write a poem on Human Rights because she wouldn't stop complaining about being bored. Her mom said she was so impressed with the poem, she urged her daughter to submit it. Her whole family was stunned when they found out she'd won.

"I think it's really awesome. Just because all this happened and I don't really, usually get to do this type of thing," says Volk.

Volk says she hopes her poem will inspire people not to judge one another and accept everyone for who they are.
