What's Next For Minot School District

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of Minot residents took to the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots for the revised $39.5 million bond proposal.  When it was all said and done, the measure passed with 66.96 percent of the votes.  So, what's next for the district?

Portable classrooms have become a familiar site within the school district. But, that will become a thing of the past, thanks to a passage of the bond measure, which will provide classroom additions to several of the existing schools.

"Anytime we can get out of portables and into bricks and mortars, it will be good for the kids," says Perkett Elementary principal Ed Sehn.

"I'm very excited," says Kendra Colby a Perkett Elementary 4th-grade teacher. "I'm excited to go back into the school with everyone else."

In the last two years, the student population at Perkett has increased by 130 kids. As of Wednesday, there were a total of 332 students enrolled. So, the school was forced to use two portables.

But, after Tuesday's bond measure was approved, there will be changes coming to elementary schools within the district in the next few years.

"Well, it will allow them to go inside," says Colby. "We can do more things with other classrooms. There are lots of different things that we're going to be able to do with less time wasted going in and out of the classroom every day."

And, the school district isn't wasting any time to get started.

"We have a grant from the state of North Dakota, which we are going to be accessing to begin that process of safety and security. But, we got a lot of work to do about re-designing those entry ways in elementary buildings to make them safe and secure, to design those additions, to get down to the specifics, and that new elementary school as well. The work is beginning, but we're excited about this opportunity to be able to move forward and address the needs of a growing school district," says Mark Vollmer the superintendent of Minot Public Schools.

Safety and security measures are expected to go into effect this summer.

Vollmer says the school district is hoping to get rolling on all the projects as soon as possible.  The first step will be to hire architects to draft designs. Construction is expected to start in the fall of 2015.
