Health Department Moves Forward With Noonan Cleanup

Posted: Updated:

It's going to take $12,000 and two days of work to cleanup illegally dumped oil socks found in a gas station in Noonan.

Secure on site services will take on the clean up project, as the owner of the gas station were the socks were dumped is a fugitive. The health department says the contractors were the only ones to submit a bid before the deadline. The project will be paid for through an abandoned oil and gas fund which oil companies pay revenue taxes into.

"It will be put in containers, appropriate containers, and then they will make sure it's taken to an appropriate facility. We will make sure all the paperwork is there and will document that it was cleaned up, containerized and disposed of in an appropriate landfill," says David Glatt of the North Dakota Health Department.

It is illegal to dispose of radioactive oil socks in North Dakota. Glatt says the socks will be taken to a facility in Colorado, Montana or Idaho which are designed to handle that type of waste.
