Spider Infestation Causes Car Recalls

Posted: Updated:

It's a recall that might give arachnaphobes the chills. The yellow sac spider is spinning webs in the vent lines of Mazda 6 Sedans. And it's causing the company to issue a voluntary recall to 42,000 Mazda 6 owners.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says spiders may weave a web in the evaporative canister vent hose, blocking it, and causing the fuel tank to have an excessive amount of negative pressure.

That could cause the fuel tank to crack, resulting in a fuel leak and increasing the risk of a fire. The recall affects certain model year 2010-2012 Mazda 6 vehicles. And it's not the first time Mazda has had a bug problem.

"What it did was actually put a clamp on the hose, so this spider couldn't come in. We did recalls on it in 2012 when the recall came out," says Tom Salmon, Bill Barth.

Now, the company is now issuing a software update to solve the spider problem. The new software will help ensure pressure won't reach dangerous levels, even if spiders manage to crawl inside the vents.

"A representative from Mazda says dealerships and affected customers will be notified by the end of the month. If you currently own a Mazda 6 and want to learn more about the recall, you can call 1-800-222-5500. The recall number associated with the campaign is 724C. Customers are advised to have their VIN number available at the time of the call.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
