Beer And Hymns Offers Untraditional Service

Posted: Updated:

Going to church doesn't traditionally involve grabbing a drink first, but a group in Mandan is changing that. Music filled the Harvest Brazilian Grill last night, which is nothing new for the lively restaurant, but what is unusual, is that those melodies were religious hymns.

Singing is a normal part of church services, but what's different about this hymn, is you can sip on a glass of beer or wine while humming along. Beer and Hymns began four-months-ago when four local pastors wanted to bring people of all denominations together for singing and fellowship.

The new-age outlook on church is attracting all ages, and between 75 and 100 people attend the monthly event. And organizers and visitors alike say, it's a very welcoming atmosphere.

"We weren't sure how the community was going to receive an idea like this because it's kind of outside the box. We really didn't know, and what we've been pleased with is people from 25 to 75 are coming out. It serves those who don't feel at ease of being in a church building," says the founder of Beer and Hymns Craig Schweitzer.

Beer and Hymns is held the first Monday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Brazilian Grill.
