Composer Helps Jazz Students Prepare For Concert

Posted: Updated:

The Williston High School jazz choir and jazz band are putting on a concert Tuesday night. To help prepare for the show, the choir brought in a composer and vocal arranger all the way from Miami, Fla.

Dr. Jeremy Fox travels nationwide helping choirs all over the country improve. He says the skill level of the Williston High School is extremely impressive.

"My job is actually pretty easy. Just to come in and give them some helpful hints, some suggestions, and some techniques for them to take with them beyond the concert even," says composer and vocal arranger Dr. Jeremy Fox.

The students enjoy the opportunity to work with Dr. Fox, and say they definitely will use what they learn from him long after the concert.

"He's awesome. He's incredible. He's not what I expected, but he's done an awesome job. He's had some really good advice and has helped us a lot. He's helped us a lot with our blending and singing as a group instead of as individuals," says senior Cass Hanson.

Dr. Fox says working with choirs is his true passion, and he was pleasantly surprised with the level of talent within the Williston high school choir.

"They're really good. Absolutely. You never know, as a clinician, to come half way across the United States and work with a choir. You don't know what to expect, and it really was a pleasant surprise to walk in and hear the sounds they're making," says Dr. Fox.

Choir director Katie Rooke agrees this is a special group of kids.

"This group of kids is super dedicated. They're all involved in choir and band in the high school, but they go above and beyond and show up for extra rehearsals because they just love doing music together. It's just fun to have that dedication, they work really hard and work together to have a great performance," says Rooke.

The show is at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the Williston Field House. There will also be a silent auction fundraiser to help the students pay for the upcoming band and choir tour to California. Pie and ice cream will be served
