Weather Halts Garden Equipment Sales

Posted: Updated:

Spring hasn't really sprung, and neither have customers shopping for gardening or landscaping equipment.

Well, outdoor hardware supplies haven't really been flying off the shelves yet. With the recent blizzard, store owners say they've had more people asking for shovels than rakes.

It's supposed to be spring, but instead of winter hardware supplies gathering dust and the spring equipment is gathering snow.

"It's such a commitment in space and time to do this switch, and that's why it's not easy to be in the snow business one day and the lawn and garden business the next," says Jeff Hinz of Kirkwood Ace Hardware.

Hinz says he started bringing lawn and garden goods into Ace Hardware about a month ago, but mother nature wasn't really on the same schedule.

"I've got a mix of birdseed and sidewalk salt in the front entry. It takes so much time to convert a store from winter to spring that we had to pull the winter goods to make room for all the spring stuff," says Hinz.

And this bi-polar weather hasn't been easy for customers either.

"It's tough, it does confuse us, but you know I would say spring has sprung and as soon as this weekend hits that's when everybody is going to be coming up with the weather warming up," says customer Dale Gossett.

Hinz agrees. He says the first bit of sunshine brings in the eager gardeners and lawn experts.

"It's not a calendar thing, it's not like March 1 or March 15 is the first nice hint of sun. It's an emotional thing. When people see sunshine, like I said, there can still be snow on the ground, but if we have a nice, clear sunny day, then they start coming in, they're looking for lawn mowers," says Hinz.

Once those outdoor enthusiasts start coming in, Hinz says the first things off the shelves are usually power rakers and crabgrass preventers.

Luckily temps are supposed to go up this weekend, so hopefully gardeners and landscapers will be able to get out and work on their yards.
