Is Your Baby Ready For Solid Food?

Posted: Updated:

Newparents are always wondering if they're doing the right thing for their child. When it comes to meal time, knowing when to switch your infant from baby foodto solid food can be confusing.

By six months, babies need developmentallyand nutritionally other foods besides breast milk or formula. They need some typeof iron supplement, which is important to help brain growth and prevent anemia.

Besides iron, infants need a varietyof other nutrients that they will be able to chew, gum and swallow.

Picking vegetables like carrots is goodbecause they provide those nutrients, but also because they are easy to mash up.

UND Center for Family Medicine DirectorKim Krohn says that often she will advice parents that baby food isn't necessary, but adapting family foods to young children in the home is appropriate.

Another tell-tale sign your baby isready for solid food is seeing that they are able to sit in a high-chair, whichreduces the risk of choking.

There are certain foods to avoid.

Dietitian Megan Schmidt says to stayaway from anything circular. That means foods like grapes, hot dogs, marshmallows because they can clog the baby's wind pipe.

Once you have switched your babyover to solids, you can start to introduce one new food item every three-to-five-days.
