Department of Transportation Enforces Regulations On Truck Drivers

Posted: Updated:

The DOT says all drivers must now have their exams performed by a certified medical examiner of DOT physicals.

"The one big change is that they won't be able just to go to any provider, they'll have to find a provider that is certified and there is a list on the national registry website where drivers can use a simple Google search function to find providers in the area," says medical examiner, Andrea Malucky.

One of the main reasons for some of the changes that are happening is because the National Transportation Safety Board found that there were too many accidents reported because drivers weren't properly certified. And even though change is never easy, drivers say the new regulations could be positive.

"I think it's a great idea because for safety...it's fair," says truck driver, Tony Meiaa.

Medical examiners say only 10,000 healthcare providers have signed up for the program so far, and that number needs to grow.

"The Federal Motor Carriers Safety Association guesstimates that we could need 40 to 50 thousand to meet the needs of our current drivers." says Malucky.

Drivers may need to make some adjustments come physical time, but the changes that are happening will help keep everyone on the road even safer.
