Weather Won't Stop Marauders

Posted: Updated:

Kevin keeps telling us something we already know about the weather in the spring. It can be sunny one day and a blizzard the next. Playing an outdoor spring sport is difficult because of cancellations or postponements. For the Marauders baseball team, they've been able to get outside, and the players are loving every minute of it.

The ground is still frozen, but come spring time, if the snow is gone it's baseball season.

"I think we are the only team outside in our conference right now. It's nice to get some live looks before we go play some real baseball," says senior Derrick Somerville.

"We have going been outside on and off this week. Indoors we do a little more of our hitting drills things like that. Out here we get to see live reps, ground balls and flyballs," says junior Jason Shaul.

Even though playing outside in North Dakota may not be a regular routine just yet, this team is taking advantage of any opportunity they can get. Heading into the conference season, coach Joel Barta likes what he has seen so far.

"We are in a good place," says Barta."The biggest thing in this league is to throw strikes and you have to pick up the ball. We think we will do pretty good at this year. Having some older guys in the infield and senior leadership in the middle and behind the plate is certainly big. Anytime you have that kind of experience, you are talking about guys who will have 150 games under their belt. That is a lot of games in our conference."

Green grass may be weeks away, and yes snow may still be in the forecast. In the mean time if these boys can play. They will be playing in the sand.

The Marauders played their first home games of the season yesterday, but to give you an idea of how topsy-turvy scheduling can be, let's use Bismarck State as the example.

On Tuesday, The Mystics moved their weekend opener against Century College to Bismarck. Today, the schools canceled that game.
