Legislators Discuss Magic City Taxes

Posted: Updated:

State legislators made their way to the Magic City today in an effort to improve how property taxes are assessed across the state.

Minot's City Assessor Kevin Ternes discussed the current property tax situation with the state's interim tax committee.

Ternes emphasized how changes in mill levies have affected what residents pay.

"That individual is now paying $2,100 in taxes instead of $1,600," Ternes says to a Minot resident. "His assessment has more than doubled. That is true. But his property taxes have not. They have gone down because the mill levy has dropped off."

The committee considered several pieces of legislation aimed at improving the tax assessment process, from how the numbers are crunched to the people who determine what your assessment will be.

"The assessor, for example, the training that the assessor is required to have before he can actually go and assess your property," says Dwight Cook, the chair of the Interim Tax Committee. "We have a bill here today that's going to make sure that they're all properly trained.  And then that we're going to make the training more readily available for them."

Other topics discussed included taxes for the state forestry service as well as tax revenue generated by the oil boom.
