Accident in Colorado Injures McLaughlin Students

Posted: Updated:

A group of adults and teens from McLaughlin, S.D. were injured in a car accident on a Colorado interstate yesterday morning. And charges are pending against the driver.

Colorado State Patrol says Kyle Henderson, 26, of Box Elder, S.D. lost control of a car carrying another 26-year-old woman and five teens from McLaughlin School on I-25 North near Fort Collins.

While roads were icy, troopers say weather was not the cause of the crash and Henderson is now facing charges.

It was supposed to be an exciting weekend for students from McLaughlin School, traveling to Colorado for the Denver March Powwow.

"The school is doing positive things, and experiencing the bigger world, bigger picture. So, now that happened people are kind of leary," says Jeff McLaughlin Sr.

But now the community is on edge waiting to hear about the condition of the five students and two adults involved in a car accident yesterday morning.

"This is the reason why some of our kids are hesitant to leave the reservation. They go out into that big world and things like this happen all of a sudden," says McLaughlin resident.

Now, members of the McLaughlin community say it's been difficult to figure out exactly what happened because the crash was so far from home, but they have been using social media to stay connected.

"Luckily, there's Facebook, and I'm pretty sure it's surfing around on Facebook, I'm pretty sure there's a page out there, a get well page," says McLaughlin resident Dean Dedman.

All the passengers are still alive, but three were thrown from the car. And Colorado State Patrol says none of the girls in the car were wearing seatbelts.

"Tragedy does happen. We don't expect it at times but it does. As far as the community and us, we just gotta hope for the best and pray for them, that's all," says Dedman.

The students were ages 13 and 14. All of the passengers were taken to Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, and Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins.

There's no word yet on what the charges are against Henderson.
