Type O Blood Needed

Posted: Updated:

Blood donation centers in North Dakota are making a push for donations of type O blood.

The need for O blood was put in to effect Friday as United Blood Services of Minot held a mobile blood drive at the Cognizant facility.

Blood banks are experiencing shortages of type O not just in North Dakota, but all across the country, so technicians say donations are key.

"Right now there is O-neg and O-positive are the first transfused of all the blood types," said Sheri Lang, the Donor Care Supervisor for United Blood Services of Minot. "So if we get short on one that's generally the one that runs a little low. And nationwide we are starting to run a little low on that so you know, it's just a concern that we want to keep a really close eye on it and make sure we don't get in a critical situation."

United Blood Services is happy to report 17 donations today, with eleven whole blood samples and six red cell donations.
