Construction Careers Holds Open House

Posted: Updated:

The Dakota Construction Careers Open Housestarts in Williston next Friday. While many job fairs come through thecommunity, this one provides a unique opportunity for those looking for acareer, not just another job. Anyone ages 18 and up is welcome, both men andwomen, and no experience is necessary.

This event allows attendees to learnmore about each specific job within the construction field and the benefitsavailable to them if they are employed. The open house is even welcoming youngadults to come out and get a head start.

"We will pay the kids, we'lltrain them ourselves, they will earn a living while they are being trained, they will have a pension, and they will have insurance. Most of these kids goto school and they come out with 30 - 40 thousand dollars in debt. Here theywill learn a career. It's not just a job, it's a career," saysDarrell Miller, a business agent with the local 49 Operating Engineers.

It's important to rememberthat contrary to popular belief, the construction field is open to anyone.

"For years, the trades havebeen considered a non-traditional career for women, and we want to throw thataside and say, it can be a traditional career. Come in and work on a positionas a laborer, or a painter, take up welding or iron work," says PamelaLink the director of business development for the Laborers District Council.

The Dakota Careers Open House isperfect for anyone who wants to work towards building their future.

"It's for anyone who wants tolook for a career, that wants to have something more than just a paycheck atthe end of the week, having health insurance, benefits and a retirement," says Jason Ehlert the president of Building Trades of North Dakota.

It's ok if you're unsure ofthe specific job within the construction field that you want to pursue. That iswhat this open house is for.

"As a coalition, we want to geteveryone to come and then you can decide after talking to all of us whatdirection you're leaning towards. Some people may want to run equipment, some may want to do ironwork," says Miller.
