Phone Scam Targets Tax Payers

Posted: Updated:

Another phone scam is making its way around, and this one the caller claims to be associated with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

During the scam the caller claims you owe the IRS money, and they may even know the last four of your social security number. According to the inspector general the scam has already stolen $1 million from people across the country. A spokesperson for the IRS says you should never pay money to a caller over the phone, and if you do owe taxes, the IRS will contact you first through the mail.

"We see scams all year long. They are variations on a theme, but they do tend to peak during tax filing season because obviously you may have just filed your return. Maybe you're expecting to hear something, maybe you're hoping for your refund. So, it may be a time when taxpayers are more susceptible for falling for scams," says IRS spokesperson Karen Connelly.

If you get the call and want to double check if you owe you can call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.
