Assistance Act Helps Homeless Students

Posted: Updated:

Currently, Williston Public School District #1 has 133 homeless students. This number remains nearly identical to the 134 homeless students in 2013.

Any student living in transitional housing or without a permanent address is considered homeless.  Deb Roel with public school district added that the extreme rent prices and lack of affordable housing in Williston is most common reason a student lives in temporary housing.

The McKinney- Vento Assistance Act was formed to ensure students get an education no matter what their living situation.

"Our role is to make sure there's no barriers to that. That we'll provide access to education, stability in education, and then, ways that they can keep coming even though they're in a situation that may not be ideal," says Roel.

The McKinney- Vento Assistance Act also helps fund school meals and extracurricular activities for homeless students.
