Medical Equipment Companies Stay Positive About Bidding Program

Posted: Updated:
The Competitive Bidding Pricing Program says only larger medical supply companies in metropolitan areas can participate in the process, and not local businesses. That means that medical equipment companies here, like St. Alexius's Great Plains Rehabilitation Services, would be forced out of the competition and lose business.

"Really, employees here at Great Plains are optimistic because we know that we have support from those representing North Dakota," says Laura Henkelman, of Great Plains Rehabilitation Services. "They understand the type of business that we're in, they know the types of devices we provide and they really know how vital they are to the people in North Dakota."

In a round table discussion with Senators John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp, medical equipment providers asked them to write a letter outlining concerns they have with the program. And Great Plains employees say so far, the public doesn't need to worry.

"We're not asking the public to do anything at this point," says Henkelman. "But just be rest assured that we are actively working on this issue and speaking to the appropriate people."

The Competitive Bidding Pricing Program should be phased in by 2016, but if smaller companies are included in the process, perhaps no medical equipment companies in North Dakota will need to close.
