Red Cross Creates Flood App

Posted: Updated:

It's National Flood Safety Awareness Week. But North Dakotans don't need anybody to remind them that flooding can be devastating.  And it pays to be prepared.

The Red Cross is on a mission. The next time there's a flood, they want you to have the vital information you need at your fingertips, no matter where you are.

"With TV and radio not always being accessible, everybody has their phones with them nowadays. So, this is a great avenue to keep that information right on them," says Melanie Moen of the Red Cross.

The free app is the latest in a series of Red Cross emergency preparedness apps. The app alerts users to location-based flood watches and warnings. It has a built-in flash light, strobe light, and alarm and contains information on what to do in the case of a flood emergency.
It can even help you to locate a Red Cross shelter in the area.

"Probably my favorite feature of the app is an 'I'm safe,' button. With one touch, you can notify friends and family members via messaging that you're safe," says Moen.

The free app is available on Apple and Android devices.

The Red Cross also offers hurricane, tornado and earthquake apps.
