Inside Business: Crabapple Floral

Posted: Updated:
New business ideas sometimes grow from small seeds. In Kelsey Ruhland's case, arranging flowers for friends' weddings started as a home-based venture and blossomed from there.

"Crabapple Floral started from my home. I did wedding and event flowers for about five years out of my home, and then I got the opportunity to open up in this space," says Kelsey Ruhland the owner of Crabapple Floral.

And she says the move to a retail storefront has been worthwhile.

"I get to chat with customers, and I get to do a lot more everyday arrangements, birthdays, anniversaries and that kind of stuff. I really like the day to day aspect of it," she says.

And that includes educating her customers about the many different varieties of flowers she has on hand.

"I like that people can come in here and touch and see the flowers. And I can tell them a little bit about each different kind of flower. I can educate them a little bit. Then they know more for the next time they come in," says Ruhland

Ruhland says one of the things she really enjoys about her business is it gives her the chance to be creative, and mix and match lots of different kinds of flowers and materials, colors and textures.

"We like to carry a lot of different things, things you probably wouldn't normally see in different flower shops. Just like to keep it interesting and bring the most out of the flowers," she says.

Ruhland is also looking forward to summer so she can expand her inventory to include locally grown flowers.

"One of my goals for the summer is to try and get most of our fresh cut product to be locally grown. I'm looking for a lot of local growers to provide some of that product for us. So, that's kind of the next step for us," says Ruhland

Ruhland says she plans to keep creating new floral arrangements for a long time to come.
