Poison Control Center Saves Children's Lives

Posted: Updated:
The American Association of Poison Control Centers says nearly 90 percent of poisonings happen at home. And many of those poisonings come from items that look extremely similar to products that aren't harmful to the body at all.

"They might look normal and safe to you because you know the difference between a Comet bottle and a bottle parmesan cheese, but a child doesn't necessarily know the difference," says Diana Read of the North Dakota Department of Health.

And health department employees say the ingredients in mouthwash can be extremely dangerous.

"People don't realize how dangerous mouthwash is to children," says Read. "And part of that is because a lot of mouthwash has alcohol in it. Their bodies aren't set up to process alcohol."

If you suspect your child has ingested something harmful, make sure to know their weight because the poison center will need to know that information.

"The weight is so important because if they've taken more pills than they should, the poison center will be able to calculate whether they should go into the emergency room or not," says Read.

So, keeping dangerous items out of the reach of children is key, because nothing in our homes is child-proof.
