Williston Schools Look For Overcrowding Solutions

Posted: Updated:

There are enrollment problems in most schools in Williston because of the constant influx of people. The Williston Public School District has a plan in place to help.

The Williston Public School District has dealt with a bunch of issues since the oil boom hit a couple years ago.

"We know what are challenges are," says Williston school's superintendent  Dr. Viola LaFontaine. "The challenges we have is increased enrollment. And we've been having that increased enrollment for the past five-years. Our enrollment has increased by 34 percent in that time."

LaFontaine says these increased numbers have caused overcrowding throughout the district and something needs to be done.

"We voted last time we did a bond measure. We did go to the people for a vote, and it failed. People were saying they wanted more input on facility planning."

Since the last bond measure failed, the district wants to do it differently this time by having three separate meetings to decide on the new building. The first meeting will be for the public to speak.

"We really want input from the community from stake holders from parents from community members," says LaFontaine. "And at that forum the community is going to be able to learn more about our facility plans. Our current status."

The second meeting will be about the new plan that the district and public are looking at. The last one will be about the finalized plan so it can be presented to the education board to decide about the bond measure.

"Over the years, we've been adding more and more students," she says. "We've got some of those elementary students that are now moving into the middle school. And it will be quickly that students will then be moving into the high school."

LaFontaine says there will be three different options for the public to decide on. The options are buildings at the elementary, middle or high school level.

The first meeting will be at 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Williston High School Commons.
