Car Ends Upside Down in Water

Posted: Updated:

At roughly 3:00 this afternoon, a Ward County Sheriff's Deputy was traveling on Highway 52 between Minot and Velva, when he saw a white SUV run off the road, avoid guard wires on the side of the road, and crash into a deep body of water.  The car hit the water with enough force to flip the vehicle over.

The Deputy immediately called in the accident and agencies responded including the Ward County Sheriff's, Minot Rural Fire, the Ward County Dive Team, and Highway Patrol.  Two sheriff's Deputy's entered the water to keep the male driver's head above the water.  Crews were able to get him out of the vehicle and he and the officers were transported to Trinity Hospital to be checked for injuries.

"That's why the wires were here.  So don't know if he got startled or fell asleep, that's still going to be under investigation by the Highway Patrol, but he definitely drove right in there not hitting the wires, and the wires go back another 40, 50 yards here," stated Lt. Larry Hubbard with the Ward County Sheriff's Department.

No word on the cause of the single vehicle accident.  North Dakota Highway Patrol will be conducting the investigation.
