Volunteers Brave The Shave

Posted: Updated:

Going bald is usually a negative part of the aging process, and it's also a common side effect for children undergoing chemotherapy. Yet there was no shortage of volunteers who braved the shave today to support funding for children's cancer research.

There are now 180 people sporting newly shaved heads in the Bismarck area, and it's all to help fight children's cancer. Today's Brave the Shave event, supports the Saint Baldrick's foundation, and was funded by Basin Electric and several other major sponsors.

The gym at the YMCA was packed with patients, survivors and supporters. The event kicked off with the knighting of the bald table, which was a easily a crowd favorite. Five men who have braved the shave for the past seven-years were knighted by a child who is either fighting cancer or has survived it. Others who didn't brave the shave, had the opportunity to donate their hair.

"This is my second time doing this. It's just an amazing event. The atmosphere here the kids, the first thing they did was bring up all the kids, and it's just really emotional to see. We have the option to do this and some of those kids don't," says Ashley Bruner of Evan's Bald Buddies.

Madison Kost who you could just see getting her hair cut, is only 4 years old, but she wanted to donated 10 inches to help make a wig for a cancer patient. Madison and Ashley's team raised $20,000. However, the overall donations for the campaign are still being accepted and tallied.

The money donated allows the Saint Baldrick's foundation to give grants for funding research opportunities.
