Sports and Rec Show Returns To Williston

Posted: Updated:

Today marks the start of Williston's annual Sports and Recreation Show. Located at the Raymond Family Community Center, this event is sure to appeal to anyone's adventurous spirit.

There are many new vendors and opportunities to check out at this year's event. Putting something together such as this doesn't happen over night. Everyone wants to be involved, and there is often a wait list.

"This process is all year long. I usually start booking people to come to the Sport and Rec show around this time for next year. And then we send out contracts during the summer, and get people booked and that kind of thing," says event coordinator Sabrina Ramey.

There are also vendors fundraising to help support local groups and organizations. The Coyote Wrestling Club is raffling off a brand new boat.

"We pay for the boys to go to nationals and camps. We have some kids that got invited to wrestle in Virginia Beach, so we help them," says event fundraiser Darcy Sletvold.

This year boasts a snake show in which performer David Richardson teaches viewers the truth behind rattle snakes. Richardson has been working with these reptiles for 22 years.

"After I go and bring all the snakes out, I kind of explain different things about them, different facts. I try to dispel myths about them, they're not as dangerous as they seem, but you still have to be very careful with them," says Richardson.

Not only is it a venomous snake show, but Richardson also ties in an anti-drug message.

"I try to weave an anti-drug message into my program because it seems that everyone is afraid of rattlesnakes, but no one seems too afraid of illegal drugs," says Richardson.

Richardson has shows Saturday and Sunday at the event.

The Sports and Recreation Show will continue tonight until 8 p.m., tomorrow at 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
