Helping Other Struggling with Addictions

Posted: Updated:

More than 4000 people seek treatment for alcohol or drug addictions each year in North Dakota.  In each one of those cases, 30 other people are affected.  But there are ways to help those struggling to get clean.

Rehab Services Inc. in Minot is looking for volunteers for their Recoveree Connection program.  It's a way to support and encourage North Dakotans dealing with addiction problems.  Created in 2008, the program has helped more than 900 people continue with their rehabilitation.

Over a 12-16 week period, volunteers would be responsible for calling those people several times a week, to listen to their problems and offer them advice to keep fighting.  "Sixty percent of the people that show up at the ER with and alcohol or drug created incident or crisis situation have something else going on.  There's an emotional crisis going on, there's an underlying medical or mental disorder and they can't tell what's going on with that until they get the addiction out of the way.  It's hard to remodel a house when it's on fire.  You get that addiction component out of the way, and then they can look at underlying causes," said Coleman Quill, the Recoveree Connection Coordinator for RSI.

There will be a volunteer training session Thursday, March 20th.  If you're interested in volunteer for a good cause, contact Rehab Services at (701) 839-4240.
