Department Shows Disappointment In Oil Numbers

Posted: Updated:

December was a disappointing month in terms of oil production numbers, and January was only a slight improvement.

Barrels produced per day were up more than 6,000 from December, but the Department of Mineral resources says they were expecting a larger increase. Helms says the weather played a major factor as wind speeds prevented work on completing wells.

"If you think back a couple of months you'll recall how many windy days and nights we had. So, we had no less than 12 days when the sustained winds were too high for any kind of well work. Over one third of the month was occupied by days when you couldn't use a coil tubing rig to clean a well out or put people on a work over rig," says Lynn Helms of the Department of Mineral Resources.

The amount of natural gas flared in January stayed the same as December. But Helms says 100 wells that were shut-in around the Hess Tioga gas plant to keep the volume of flaring down. The gas plant is behind in restarting after upgrades.
