Good Works: Blanket Ladies

Posted: Updated:

It's nice to count on friends when you need to get something done. Of course, it helps if the task isn't too difficult. A group of women's handiwork has been distributed throughout the community.

Tying blankets may not take a lot of skill but you need plenty of material. About a year and a half ago, Dianne Schaeffer was given a pile of fleece and was asked to do something with it. She enlisted the help of the ladies in her water aerobics class at Touchmark.

"They're willing workers," says Schaeffer.

They made quick work of it and then decided to buy their own material to keep going. From October through April, they meet every Wednesday after class to maintain their mission of warmth and friendship.

"We celebrate our birthdays. We play cards every Thursday. We do go to lunch. We do a lot of things together. Take occasional field trips, coffee about every day," says Schaeffer.

But it's not an exclusionary group. In fact, there's room at the table for anyone who wants to come.

"I've made 16 for my 16 grandkids, plus for a dog. And then, I made my parents one when they were alive. And every once in a while someone will want one, and I still make them," says new recruit Marlys Steinman.

These blankets go to places like Carrie's Kids, the Abused Adult Resource Center, and the Highway Patrol. Another recent donation will keep them busy for a few more weeks.

"As spring comes, we take a break and do our gardening and whatever and then we'll start up again the next October," says Schaeffer.

The ladies estimate they've made more than 300 blankets. And they have no intentions of stopping.
