Carnival Helps Bring Medicine to Haiti

Posted: Updated:
A Bismarck fundraiser is going to make an impact thousands of miles away.

The Citizens of the World Foundation, run by a team of anesthesiologists, is hosting a Haitian Carnival to collect money and raise awareness about what doctors and nurses do when they visit Haiti.

Ashley Rauart has never been to Haiti. As a member of the military, she's done plenty of traveling, but this time, she's going to teach.

"You can make the difference and you can see the difference that you make. That's why I go, because you can literally see the difference that you make and it really is giving back," says Rauart.

The team will teach anesthesiology at the Justinian University Hospital. The Citizens of the World Foundation has made plenty of progress in its nine months of existence.

"It's been quite a year," says Lura Spears of Citizens of the World Foundation. "It's gone from an idea in the restaurant, in the hotel, in Haiti, to all of the sudden where we've already purchased our first anesthesia machine. It's sitting in customs in Haiti right now."

Spears has two young boys who are very aware of their mother's work.

"If I leave the house, it's always, 'Are you going to Haiti today?'" she says.

Spears and Cleary have made several trips to Haiti over the last four years, teaching residents, students and practicing professionals and giving them the tools they need.

"Our hope is that as we grow and as the people who graduate from the program, move into the community, we'll be able to support them both with continuing education and with their equipment needs as they go out in the community," says William Cleary of the foundation.

The foundation has a goal to purchase at least two more anesthesia machines, spinal needles and portable kits for Haiti. They leave April 4.

William, Lura and Ashley say everyone should come to the Haitian Carnival fundraiser, March 21 at the Sixteen03 Main Events venue. There will be food, music and fun for all.
