American Legion Honors Veterans

Posted: Updated:

As veterans age leaving their homes can be difficult, so the American Legion Post 26 brought the ceremony to the veterans Tuesday afternoon in a special way.

Pins and badges can be seen on Edwin Klebe's uniform that he wore during World War II.  They represent a life of service to his country.

"It was so many years ago, it's hard to remember."

Klebe, a U.S. Army veteran, pulled out his old uniform for the ceremony honoring veterans at Brentmoor Assisted Living in Minot.

"Our purpose here is to thank these veterans of yester years for veterans like myself of having the freedom of being veterans of today to be the example of veterans of tomorrow and to me that is a very, you know, big statement to really have to say," says Richard Reuer, American Legion Post 26 Chaplin.

Twenty-one residents from all branches of military were recognized for serving our country in uniform during times of war.

The 13th fold, or when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding us of our nation's motto, "In God We Trust."

Reuer says, "Being a veteran myself, every time when I visit other veterans, it's like I'm seeing a long-lost brother or sister.  You know, that's what a veteran is.  It's a family we all know what you went through and we all understand."

After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the Soldiers who served under George Washington and the Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for us the rights, privileges, and freedom we enjoy today."

As the ceremony wrapped up, veterans like Klebe will never be forgotten.  Brentmoor has dedicated a special wall to honor and thank all of its veterans for their service.

The American Legion holds a veterans' program at Brentmoor on the second Tuesday of every month.
