Flooding Continues In Eastern Montana

Posted: Updated:

The flooding situation has improved somewhat today, but high water remains a concern in eastern Montana.

Lots of people were driving over the Yellowstone River near Sidney this afternoon to take pictures and see for themselves the havoc rapidly melting snow can cause.

Miles Muscha is racing against the rising water. He spent the day driving from Glendive to Sidney, fencing off access to the Yellowstone River.

"This site was dry and within two minutes it was two feet deep, so the water and ice can come racing and catch people off guard," says Muscha.

This ice jam situation is extremely dangerous due to how quickly the water is rising and how fast the ice chunks are moving.

"What it will do is it back the water up like it is here and there must be a jam downstream a ways and when it breaks free this water will build up somewhere else," says Sheriff Brad Baisch.

Wild life didn't need warning signs to evacuate the river bottoms when the water began to build up.

"Going up and down the river the deer bolted out of the river bottoms, and they can move a lot faster than we can," says Muscha.

Muscha says once the water recedes, access to the river will be restored.
