Montana Flooding Causes Air Force Rescue

Posted: Updated:

Montana Governor Steve Bullock has declared a flood emergency for the entire state after warm temperatures the past few days and ice jams have triggered widespread flooding. Thirty of the Montana's 56 counties are under some type of high water warning.

In Sidney, the Yellowstone River rose so quickly late last night that two men who were checking river levels were completely surrounded by rapidly rising water and chunks of ice moving at 30 mph.

The situation became so dangerous that neither the Richland County Sheriffs office or the Savage Fire Department could launch a boat to rescue the men, so a helicopter from the Minot Air Force base was dispatched to rescue them.

"The wall of water must have been two to three feet high. They said it got into the floorboards of their pickup and they actually climbed in the back of the pickup to stay dry, both were uninjured and dry," says Sheriff Brad Vaisch of Richland County.

The two men were taken to the safety of the Sidney airport after they were air lifted out of the stranded truck.
