New App Helps You Brush

Posted: Updated:

There's a new toothbrush coming out thatgoes hand and hand with an app that actually tracks how well you brush.

If you're a parent trying to getyour child to brush their teeth, it could be quite a challenge.

"It's hard to figure outwhether he's done a good job or not," says Tara Jones.

And, as they get older, they want tobe more independent.

"He doesn't like me to do it anymore. So, I just kind of have to trust his word that he's doing what I taught him,"says Jones.

While, Jones can hope that her sonis brushing correctly, soon there will be a way to keep a closer eye on herlittle one's brushing habits.

"It's going to tell them you'redoing a great job or sometimes they'll say, you're not doing such a great job,"says Reeann Magandy a registered dental hygienist at Dakota Kids Dentistry.

It's called the Kolibree toothbrush, which is an electronic toothbrush that syncs up with an app on your phone.

"There are three things. It'sgoing to time how long they're brushing. What areas of the mouth they'rebrushing. And, then also the kind of strokes you're using when brushing," says Magandy.

It even gives you a progress reporton all of your hard work. But, there may be a few flaws.

"Ikind of noticed it doesn't track how hard you're brushing. A lot of timeswith an electric toothbrush, people have to realize that the toothbrush isgoing to be doing the work. So, you don't need to press really hard than you dowith a manual. You just want to move it around and let it do the work. Anotherthing is its not going to tell if the kids are brushing the gums," says Magandy.

Whilethe app is free to download, the cost of the toothbrush can range between $99 and$200 depending on the model.

"Theone downside is it said that the battery life it will recharge, but then itsaid after two- years it's kind of done and you need to replace the entiretoothbrush," says Magandy.

So, areyou willing to dip into your pocket every two years?

"Itdepends on how beneficial it is. I mean if it's worth it. If you can tryit for the first two years and it works. Yes. I would probably replace it. Iwould probably do it again," says Jones.

Both the app and toothbrush will be available this summer. Thereis also a beam brush which runs for about $25 that also connects to yourphone and records brushing time. However, the Kolibree can track the brushmovements whereas the beam brush cannot.
