Health Department Tracks Radioactive Waste Disposal

Posted: Updated:

As North Dakota's oil industry increases, waste from fracking and other oil operations are becoming problematic.

Oil companies are not allowed to dispose of any type of oilfield waste that contains above normal radioactive levels in North Dakota. But all too often, that waste is not properly disposed of.

The North Dakota Department of Health is fast tracking rules that will enhance the state's ability to track radioactive waste.

"That will require record keeping right from the point where the material is generated at the well site all the way to where it is finally disposed," says Scott Radig of the Division of Waste Management.

Radig says these rules will help the department trace illegally dumped waste back to the company. The first draft of the proposed rules will be posted in June and anyone can send comments to the Health Department.
