Encouraging Kids to Play With Food

Posted: Updated:

Most kids are told not to play with their food, but that wasn't the case Saturday at Century High School in Bismarck.

St. Alexius and Kohl's Cares partnered up to *encourage* kids to play with their food.

Children in grades 2nd through 5th  came out to learn about healthy food choices and how to prepare simple, fun snacks.

Organizers say the goal of the class is to start healthy eating habits young, and the children say they were excited to learn how to cook.

"Just kind of getting back into the arrangement of cooking, learning some new stuff and what to do before you cook and what to try new stuff for," said Jordyn Warner, a 5th grade participant.

"They really are so energetic and they want to experience just to do something themselves which I think is great and they are able to do that by adding nutrition to their lifestyle," said Duane Ehrens, the class instructor and Head Chef at St. Alexius.

While the kids played in the kitchen, parents were taken to the supermarket to learn how to shop on a budget and how to accurately read food labels.
