Foundation Fights Cancer By Shaving Heads

Posted: Updated:

A couple dozen people were shaving their heads today and not at a barber.

As a pediatrician Dr. Melissa Seibel treats kids everyday, and sadly she's seen far to many of them receive a cancer diagnosis. But today she decided to do something about it.

"It's good to be able to do something," says Seibel.

And that something was to getting on stage in front of a crowd of supporters and shaving off her brown locks.

"It's just so good to be part of a huge nationwide effort," says Seibel. "To really make the treatments that they receive better."

She was able to raise more than $2,000 for the cause, which will all be put to good use.

"Pure and simple this goes to help those who have been diagnosed with cancer. To find a cure for that cancer both with research and the betterment of their lives," says Mike Eggl, Basin Electric.

But the event isn't just about raising money. It's also about raising the spirits of those affected by cancer.

"They are clearly having a good day," says Eggl. "One mother said that St. Baldrick's is a break in the rain, a break in the rain because we try to bring them out and do something."

Another doctor agreed to shave his head but at the last minute the crowd wanted more.

And $2,700 later, Dr. Ocejo agreed to shave his mustache something he hasn't done since his 20s.

Today's fundraiser brought in more than $23,000, and raised the spirits of countless children and their families.

Last year the St. Baldrick's foundation gave a $44,000 Sanford's Pediatric Oncology Department.
