Self Defense Course Empowers Women

Posted: Updated:
According to the North Dakota Attorney General's office, in 2012, 14,866 crimes were reported by local law enforcement agencies. That is an increase of 7.9 percent from the total of 13,788 reported in 2011.
Three Bismarck women are doing something about those numbers.

Last summer Beth Warford created a self defense course called Pretty Loaded. It consists of a group of three women who have their sights on reducing crime and building confidence for women in North Dakota.

"We need to be empowered. We need to know we are able to take care of ourselves, and we have to be aware that life is changing," says Roxanne Reis. "It is getting more dangerous and it's time to start being proactive."

There are three parts to the course. Handling handguns and shotguns, situational awareness and the art of self defense.

It's called North Dakota Krav Maga. The martial art of Krav Maga was created for the Israeli military. The goal is to teach people how to get out of real life situations or threats. Tomas Reis is the instructor, and the ladies at Pretty Loaded and their students are using his 40 years of police and military experience to put criminals in their place.

"If it hasn't worked for me in real life, I'm not going to teach it. You have to be aware of your surroundings," says Reis. "I have a great understanding of what people need in the chaos of an attack. It's gotta be simple, and it's gotta be automatic."

For these students it seems to be working.

"It's a confidence builder," says student Angie McCloud. The more people that do it will keep crime down because people know we're not just easy targets."

For the instructors seeing that progress is rewarding.

"If I can save one girl from being raped or hurt then I succeeded. That's our goal. I love this state, and I want women to protect themselves. I don't want transients to move in and change the way we're doing things around here," says Beth Warford.

The classes teach you to fight like your life depends on it.
