Family Focus: Fictional Characters

Posted: Updated:

As we grow up, we start to realize that the fictional characters we've known for years may not actually be real.

From a very young age we're taught what to do once we lose a tooth. Teaching kids the difference between real and fake can sometimes be hard. At ABC Child Care, different characters mean different discussions.

We all have our favorite fictional characters and holiday figures.

"At Christmas time we teach them how with Santa Claus, he's always watching," says ABC Child Care preschool teacher Christina Senf.

Conversations like these help kids learn why it's important to make good choices all year and not just around holiday time.

Story-time can also play an important role in your child's development. Senf says books like Snow White teach kids to be kind to one another, the golden rule, and to make good choices.

With all this attention on fictional figures, parents should remember that eventually their child will grow up and start to figure things out.

ABC Child Care Director LaVonne Beyerle says telling your child that you are acting as the fictional character because you love them is a good lead-in.

After all, parents are the most important people in a child's life.
