Family Talks About Homeschooling

Posted: Updated:

Parents have several educational options for their children. But that's not always the case in other countries. For instance, a German family sought asylum in the U.S. a few years ago because the government wouldn't allow them to home school

A mother and homeschool teacher, Jennifer Bender says she's happy to live in a nation where she can choose the type of education for her children.

Jennifer Bender taught in both private and public school for seven years.

She says over the years she noticed some things that couldn't be helped in traditional school settings. There's class time that's lost setting up, tearing down, changing classes. Every student learns differently, and teachers don't always have time or the ability to give special attention to each and every student.

That's why she chose homeschooling for her three boys.

"You have to have passion for it," says Bender. "And if you have a passion for it you want to do it. There's ways."

"It's fun. You always get to be with your friends and brothers and mom," says Eric, one of Bender's sons.

"I feel like it's a lot easier to get it done when it's just one-on-one," says Nathan another one of Bender's sons.

Bender says homeschooling lets her sons study and work throughout the day, giving them the flexibility to study and work at the pace that best suits them.

Talking with her about the German family's choice to flee their country in order to homeschool, she says that must have been a difficult choice.

"To have someone tell us that we're not allowed to do that for our own children is hard to imagine," says Bender.

Bender says the boys participate in intramural sports, take music lessons, participate in science competitions and over-all are very socially active and busy.

"I've heard as homeschooling conventions that actually hinders people because you have this mindset of group schooling and how it has to be done. And you kind of try to replicate that in your house, when you don't need to," says Bender.

Bender says it's important to find out the best way to teach your child.

Bismarck Public Schools Superintendent Tamara Uselman says it's important to respect any choice a parent makes for their child's education, whether it's a public, parochial or homeschooling.
